We report the first detection of the J = 1..-->..0 transition of CH/sub 2/CN at 18.4 GHz in the dark cloud TMC-1 and the complex molecular cloud Sgr B2. This is the first time that CH/sub 2/CN has been seen in a cold dust could and that the hyperfine structure of a transition of this molecule has been resolved in space. We find a column density N(CH/sub 3/CN) of 7 x 10/sup 12/ cm/sup -2/ in TMC-1, comparable to that of many other molecules there. In Sgr B2 the emission shows self-absorption in two of the hyperfine components.
