Use of mixed solvents for extraction treatment of phenol-containing waters
In the course of thermal processing of solid fuel a large quantity of phenol-containing waters are produced, which are a source of air and water pollution. In addition, a valuable chemical feedstock - phenols - are lost when these waters are discharged into reservoirs. Recently extraction methods have widely been used in the recovery of phenols. The most common and accessible extraction agents are butyl acetate, coal-tar oils and benzene. Butyl acetate has a high distribution coefficient, but undergoes hydrolysis in the process of phenol removal. The presence of free ammonia, bivalent phenols and higher alcohols exerts a significant effect on the hydrolysis. When coal-tar oils are used as the extraction agents, the completeness of the phenol removal process depends on the content of phenols in the initial extraction agent. In addition, the emulsion formed by coal-tar oils, water and alkali complicates the extraction process. The intensity of emulsion formation depends on the pH of the water, its tar content, the rate of mixing of the phases and the temperature of the process. Benzene is an inexpensive coke by-product which is chemically stable and easily removed with alkali washing, but is characterized by a low coefficient of distribution, and thus repeated extraction is required to attain a high degree of phenol removal. In this study we examined the effect of additives (pyridine and quinoline) on the efficiency of removal of phenols from technological waste waters by the benzene method. It was shown that the best phenol extraction agent is a solution of quinoline in benzene. The degree of phenol removal approximates 99% at a quinoline concentration in benzene of 30% and a temperature of 20/sup 0/C.
