Giant Yates field: pride of the pecos. [Operation by unitization]

On October 28, 1926, the I.G. Yates No. 1 oil well blew in at a rate later developed to 72,000 barrels a day, to be followed by Yates A-30, tested at 200,000 barrels per day. The story of how Peter Gregory got to America and became employed by Humble Oil and Marathon at Yates is told. During the fifty-year history of Yates, it has produced over 620 million barrels of oil. A major reason for its longevity is the fact that 18 months after the field was discovered, the principal operators decided a conservation plan should be adopted. One of the principal goals of a conservation plan was to prevent the unnecessary production of gas with the oil. Other efforts included minimizing water production, instituting annual bottom-hole pressure surveys, and compiling pressure production history that is superior to any other field today. Even with these measures, though, pressure has been declining in the Yates reservoir, because of oil, gas, and water production. The sum of all of these is the voidage. Unitization is the crown in the long history of exemplary management of the Yates reservoir. After the pressure began falling, a study was made and it showed that the voidage could be reduced if gas were reinjected. Under Marathon's guidance, the new program will increase the recoverable reserves by 200 million barrels. (MCW)
