A mechanical supercharger is described for compressing a precombustion intake mixture for an internal combustion engine, comprising: a housing having an inlet port and an outlet port; compression means in the housing for compressing the precombustion intake mixture provided through the inlet port and discharging the compressed precombustion mixture to the outlet port, the compression means comprising two rotors mounted on parallel shafts and means at one end of the shafts for rotatably driving the shafts; passage means separate from the compression means and comprising a bypass passage disposed in the housing adjacent another end of the shafts and connecting the inlet port and the outlet port with each other; relief valve means disposed in the passage means and comprising means for selectively releasing outlet port pressure to the inlet port vial the passage means, wherein the relief valve means comprises an insert member positioned in the passage means, the insert member having a relief valve passage communicating the inlet port with the outlet port, a relief valve slidably disposed in the insert member and positionable for closing the relief valve passage, and spring means for biasing the relief valve to close the relief valve passage, and a pressure equalizing opening independent of the relief valve passage and extending between an interior of the insert member and a portion of the passage means outside of the insert member.
