This paper provides a status report on actions by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to provide guidance regarding radiation protection from naturally occurring radioactive materials (NORM). The talk discusses three aspects of EPA`s work: contract studies; CRCPD draft NORM regulations; sewage NORM projects. Contract studies have concentrated on response to the Diffuse NORM report issued in May 1993. Work has been done on waste characterization, risk assessment, and radiation exposure pathways. New draft exposure regulations are being proposed which include flexibility for states regarding the fraction of the yearly exposure which could come from TENORM sources. Sewage work has included guidance on typical radioisotopes found, what different agencies can do, how to respond to radiation, who to contact, etc.
