Polymer injection is used to improve the sweeping efficiency, and to improve the mobility ratio. The mobility ratio in the waterflood could be reduced efficiently by adding small amounts of polymer to the water. Polymer injection is a recovery process, which uses polymers in concentrations of 200 to 1500 ppM in the water. There are 2 kinds of polymers: polyacrylamides (synthetic), and biopolymers. The polyacrylamides increase the viscosity of the oil, and alter the permeability of the rocks, and also, decrease the effective mobility of the injected water. These kinds of polymers are very sensitive to salts, and are easily degradable by mechanical ways. On the other hand, biopolymers are not sensitive to salinity, and are less liable to mechanical degradation than the polyacrylamides. The major disadvantage of the biopolymers is their susceptibility of being attacked by bacteria. One of the best improvements in the manufacture of polymers consists in the production of liquid polymers. The main advantage of these liquid polymers is their relative ease of handling, and their relative ease of being mixed during field operations. 12 references.
