This patent describes a gas turbine engine comprising: a rotatable compressor wheel; a rotatable turbine wheel; means coupled the wheels for conjoint rotation; a combustion chamber having an air inlet disposed to receive compressed air from the compressor wheel, a fuel inlet for receipt of fuel to be oxidized, and a combustion gas outlet disposed to provide combustion gas under pressure to the turbine wheel to rotate the same; valve means between the compressor wheel and the combustion chamber to the compressor wheel; and means for starting the engine including means for periodically injecting and combusting fuel in the chamber so as to create a pressurized gas.
