Energy after the eighties

OSTI ID:5980498
This book presents information on the present and possible future energy systems of a group of 14 countries. Since the 1970's there has been an increasing awareness of the desirability of a planned transition to a future in which crude oil no longer takes the leading role in the world energy scene. Such a transition would obviously be constrained by technological possibilities, resource availability and costs; its planning must therefore be based on the best possible estimates of these parameters together with knowledge and understanding of the complex nature of energy supply and use. The International Energy Agency initiated a cooperative study to compile data and examine the interplay between resources, prices and combinations of new energy technologies. The countries involved were: Australia, Austria, Belgium, West Germany, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, UK and USA. Canada, Denmark, Greece and the EEC also supported the work and collaborated with the study analysts. To examine all the complex, interdependent elements of an energy system in a manageable way, a computer modelling program MARKAL - was developed and applied to each country. The results of the study are presented in this book.
