Cogeneration alternatives for Keyes Fibre Company paper mill are assessed. Four coal-fired cogeneration systems and one thermal-energy-only plant are conceptually designed and evaluated with respect to the existing oil-fired, noncogenerating system. Cogeneration with a backpressure turbine, as well as the thermal-only plant, appears to be a feasible alternative to the existing plant. The back-pressure turbine system may become economically more attractive than the thermal-only plant if the price of purchased electricity escalates more rapidly than that of coal.
