Operation of a diagonal-type MHD generator outside the design range

Journal Article · · High Temp. (Engl. Transl.); (United States)
OSTI ID:5979358

Numerical studies have been performed on variable states of operation and transient response in a diagonal MHD generator with heavy supersonic-flow retardation. It is shown that supersonic, subsonic, and mixed flows containing shock waves can occur in the channel of an MHD generator, which lead to substantially nonlinear voltage-current and load characteristics. Nonlinear effects give rise to optimum values for the induction and load resistance, which provide maximum power or voltage. Cyclic variation in field or load resistance results in hysteresis. The characteristic times have been determined for typical transients.
