A systematic study of single and multiple electron capture, transfer ionization and direct ionization in collisions of low energy highly charged (LEHQ rare gas) Ar ions withes (He, Ne, Ar, Kr, and Xe) and of LEHQ rare gas (Ne, Ar, Kr, and Xe) ions with He has been performed for a range of projectile charge states q=2 x 13 and at collision velocities of, typically, 10/sup 6/ x 10/sup 7/ cm/s. The LEHQ ions were obtained from a recently developed secondary recoil ion source that uses the collisions of fast (ca 1 MeV/amu) ions with gaseous targets to produce slow highly charged ions. Cross sections for transfer ionization and direct ionization as well as normal charge capture were measured. Direct ionization was found to be negligibly small in this range of collision energies. Transfer ionization was found to be important, representing as much as 50% of the observed single capture. The experimental results were compared to several theoretical models and a simple Landau-Zener calculation was performed for the case of He targets.
