Some effects of a soluble NPK fertilizer on sensitivity of eastern white pine to injury from SO/sub 2/ air pollution. [Pinus strobus]

Journal Article · · For. Sci.; (United States)

SO/sub 2/-sensitive and -tolerant clones of eastern white pine (Pinus strobus L.) were fertilized with a soluble NPK formulation (23:19:17) and artificially exposed to SO/sub 2/ when the needles were 25 to 50 mm long. Similarly fertilized potted clones were exposed to ambient air in a field where SO/sub 2/ is believed to be a major pollutant. The fertilizer applications reduced the extent of necrosis of needle tips, a symptom of air pollution injury, in several sensitive clones. In the field experiment other symptoms, such as chlorotic banding and mottling, were not alleviated by the fertilizer applications. 1 table.
