Raman spectroscopic study of coal-graphitic materials

Journal Article · · Inorg. Mater. (Engl. Transl.); (United States)

A linear relationship has been obtained between the quantity inverse to the average dimension of the coherent scattering regions of x-rays L/sub a/ and the ratio of the peak intensities of the bands at /minus/1360 and /minus/1580 cm/sup /minus/1/ in the Raman spectrum of the coal-graphitic materials. This relationship is nullified in the region L/sub a/ < 5 nm, but is restored when products of heights of peaks and their half-width is used in place of amplitudinal intensities. The Raman spectrum permits identification of the structure type (turbostratic, crystallite) and the stage of graphitization (precrystallization, graphitization proper) of coal-graphitic materials.
