Arecibo observations of the neutral hydrogen content of galaxies in the Hercules supercluster reveal clear signs of enviromnetal dependence. The supercluster galaxies are compared with a sample of isolated galaxies charcterized by the same absolute luminosity range and observed with the same telescope. While for the galaxies in the superclusters periphery (dispersed component) one observes m/sub H//L ratios smilar to the average values of the comparison sample, a strong deficiency is indicated near the region of the cluster A2174, where the existence of a conspicuous intracluster medium is betrayed by the presence of a strong, diffuse X-ray source. The clear deficiency in A2147 contrasts with the ambiguous picture offered by A2151, the richest and densest aggregate in the supercluster, where more of the observed galaxies were detected and found to be from normal to mildly gas deficient, indicating that a sweeping mechanism which depends on the intracluster medium density is at work. Preliminary optical data show the swept galaxies to be redder than the ones with normal m/sub H//L ratios, corroborating the indication that substantial galactic evolution may be catalyzed by opportune environmental conditions.
