Superconductivity and charge-density waves

Journal Article · · Phys. Rev. B: Condens. Matter; (United States)
Superconductivity in a metal with a charge-density-wave (CDW) brokensymmetry is investigated within the framework of Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffertheory. The anisotropic gap equation for /Delta/(/bold k/) is solvedanalytically. We find that whenever /bold k/ approaches a CDW energy gap,/Delta/(/bold k/) undergoes a sudden increase. This behavior is the opposite ofthat found for a spin-density-wave (SDW) broken symmetry, for which/Delta/(/bold k/) decreases precipitously as /bold k/ approaches a SDW energygap.
