The reaction of 1,5-dimethyl-3-ethylbicyclo(3.1.0)hexane with sulfur dioxide in the presence of antimony pentachloride leads to bicyclic sulfinic esters. Here 1,5-dimethyl-3-ethylbicyclo(3.1.0)hexane also undergoes a Dem'yanov rearrangement. The structure of the rearrangement product was established by x-ray crystallographic analysis. Under the same conditions butylcyclopropane and bicyclo(4.1.0)heptane mainly give resinification products.
