Evolution of density discontinuity in rarefied plasma kinetics

Journal Article · · Sov. Phys. - JETP (Engl. Transl.); (United States)
OSTI ID:5971607
A study is made of the motion of a rarefied plasma as a result of decay of a density discontinuity. Plasma is described by a kinetic equation with a self-consistent field which is solved numerically by the particle-in-cell technique. It is shown that eventually the motion approaches the self-similar solution considered by Gurevich, Pariiskaya, and Pitaevskii (Sov. Phys. JETP 22, 449 (1966); 27, 476 (1968); 36, 274 (1973)). It is shown that the self-similar solution describes correctly the acceleration of ions in a plasma expanding in vacuum.
