Convenient method for the production of 4-oxoalkanal dimethyl 1-acetals from carboxylic esters

4-Oxoalkanal dimethyl 1-acetals are obtained with an overall yield of 60-85% by the action of 1-bromo-2-ethoxycyclopropyllithium on methyl carboxylates, acid-catalyzed methanolysis of the obtained 1-bromo-2-ethoxycyclopropyl ketones, and subsequent treatment of the reaction mass with zinc powder or triphenylphosphine.
