Delayed time triggering and data acquisition
- Los Alamos National Laboratory, Los Alamos, New Mexico (USA)
A data acquisition system is described that is capable of making triggering decisions by a high level microprocessor in real time based on time series data. The system is to be used in large imaging Cherenkov detector systems for astrophysical gamma ray searches and for high precision neutrino electron elastic scattering experiments carried out at Los Alamos. The time series trigger capability is required because the light travel times in these detectors are larger than the desired time coincidence windows. The system described presents a dead-timeless'' front end that has sufficient buffer depth to allow a time-series analysis of the triggering patterns by the microprocessor (called the Global Trigger Generator) to select rare neutrino induced events out of an enormous background of cosmic ray and noise signals.
