Estimating costs of asbestos abatement
Asbestos abatement is one of the major areas in construction over the next 15 years. The Asbestos Hazard Emergency Regulation Act (AHERA) has mandated extremely strict standards for schools that have asbestos-containing materials (ACM). This law alone will provide schools with incentive to abate asbestos and remove ACM from its premises. It is estimated that $10 billion to $20 billion will be required to remove asbestos from the 33,000 school buildings across the United States. This paper discussed some of the problems associated with obtaining good asbestos cost estimates, the variation that is seen in developing these estimates, and problems in scheduling and planning asbestos-related projects. The author shows examples of actual projects currently being performed by PEI Associates, Inc.
