A wellhead valve is described for use within a wellhead comprising a tubular body having a central passage therethrough with a downwardly facing valve seat surrounding a portion of the central passageway, internal threads, external threads and a cylindrical sealing surface above the valve seat, a valve member mounted within the central passage below the valve seat and adapted to more axially therein to close flow through the valve seat, means biasing the valve member into engagement with the valve seat, a plug threaded into the central passage internal threads and having sealing means for sealing against the cylindrical sealing surface in the passage; and a projection extending axially within the passage between the sealing means and the valve member, the plug adapted to be positioned in an upper position within the passage with its sealing means in sealing engagement with the cylindrical sealing surface to prevent flow through the passage, the plug being positionable lower than the upper position in a first lower position in the passage with the sealing means out of sealing engagement with the cylindrical sealing surface to allow the valve member to be operative as a back pressure valve, the plug being positionable lower than the first lower position in the passage with the sealing means out of sealing engagement with the cylindrical sealing surface and engaging the valve member to hold the valve member out engagement with its valve seat to allow flow through the passage.
