The Hazlit Creek field in NW. Wilkinson County, Mississippi, about 30 miles (48 km) south of Natchez, is an excellent example of an Eocene Wilcox oil field discovered by subsurface mapping and stratigraphic studies. The field was discovered in March 1966 and now contains 22 producing oil wells; only 5 dry holes have been drilled north and east of the field. Commercial oil pools are trapped stratigraphically in 8 separate sandstones in a 375-ft (115 m) section of the lower middle Wilcox Group between depths of 6,875 and 7,250 ft (2,095 and 2,210 m). The field has produced more than 1 million bbl of high-gravity oil from a single sandstone unit; completions in other sandstones have been effected only in recent months. The field is not completely developed on the west and southwest. The Wilcox oil sandstones average 30% porosity and 350 md permeability and have calculated oil recovery up to 850 bbl per acre ft. Volumetric calculations of reserves as now outlined are approx. 5 million bbl of oil. The field is small by industry standards, but it is one of approx. 300 Wilcox oil fields in the area, and indications are good that many more fields will be discovered in the Wilcox trend.
