Photodissociation of Xe/sub 2//sup +/ and Kr/sub 2//sup +/ in the ultraviolet: application to Xe/sub 2/Cl formation kinetics

Conference · · AIP Conf. Proc.; (United States)
OSTI ID:5964361
An optical approach to monitoring the population densities of the rare gas dimer ions Xe/sub 2//sup +/ and Kr/sub 2//sup +/ in real time was developed. An excimer laser was used to photodissociate the Rg/sub 2//sup +/ ion via the 1(1/2)/sub u/ ..-->.. 2(1/2)/sub g/ UV absorption band and the resulting depletion of the molecular ion population is detected by observing the 6p ..-->.. 6s fluorescence of the neutral xenon or krypton atom. This technique was applied to examining the formation kinetics of the triatomic rare gas-halide molecule Xe/sub 2/Cl (2/sub GAMMA/).
