Risk assessment of radon in drinking water

Conference · · Trace Subst. Environ. Health; (United States)
OSTI ID:5963530
By combining information about occurrence, transport, exposure and health effects of radon from drinking water, it has been estimated that over a period of 70 years, between 5000 and 50,000 lung cancer fatalities are caused by inhalation of natural radon gas released from US public drinking water supplies. The average concentration of radon in these water supplies generates a lifetime risk of the order of 1 in 10,000, a higher risk than for any contaminant currently regulated under the Safe Drinking Water Act.
