Liquid nitroglycerin charges of 1,000 qt were detonated within the formation in two 500-ft gas wells to evaluate a new explosive fracturing technique. The tests, conducted in cased and open hole by the U.S. Bureau of Mines in cooperation with Sun Oil Co. - DX Division, demonstrated that desensitized nitroglycerin can be safely loaded, displaced, and detonated in hydraulically induced fractures. Explosive power of the nitroglycerin enlarged the 5-3/4-in. open hole well bore to 31 in. In cased hole, photographs showed wide vertical fracturing, but little cavity enlargement due to containment by the casing. In cooperation with the operator, a 2-well was designed for open hole and perforated casing evaluation. The well preparation, nitroglycerin, and projection tests are described.
