Title: Chromium, zinc, manganese, copper, nickel, iron and cadmium concentrations in the hair of residents of Chandigarh, India and Bangkok, Thailand

Conference · · Trace Subst. Environ. Health; (United States)
OSTI ID:5960393

The hair concentrations of chromium, zinc, manganese, copper, iron, nickel and cadmium for normal young adults residing in Chandigarh and in Bangkok were compared with those for white males living in Denver. In Chandigarh, mean Zn and Cu levels were lower and Fe levels higher than those in Denver. In Bangkok concentrations of Mn, Fe, Ni and Cd were higher than in the other two areas. Individual hair Mn levels ranged from < 20 ppB in Denver to > 15 ppM in Bangkok. Chromium concentrations in the hair were similar for all three countries. Hair samples from infants and children, aged < 4 years, were also analyzed. Age related differences were dependent on the geographical location. In Bangkok concentrations of all elements were similar to those of adults in the same city. In Chandigarh hair levels of Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn and Ni were all higher than in adults. Hair Zn concentrations for subjects under 4 years of age in Chandigarh and Denver were lower than those of adults but this did not apply in Bangkok. Trace element levels in the hair of Chandigarh infants suffering from protein-calorie malnutrition were not lower than those of normal infants. 16 references, 3 tables.
