Natural gas production in New York State declined in 1971. Leasing activity increased because of 2 new Edgecliff reef field discoveries. Only 3 oil field development wells were drilled. Natural gas production in New York State for 1971 was 2,201,845 Mcf. This year's production was 1,156,155 Mcf less than 1970 production, as Oriskany gas production was down 908,995 Mcf and Medina gas production was down 161,576 Mcf. There was a downward trend in gas production from the Clinton, Bertie-Akron and post-Oriskany units. The major interests of the operators were the Medina and Oriskany gas reservoirs. Six wells were drilled below the Queenston to test the Cambrian and Ordovician formations. In 1971, crude oil production in New York, based on pipeline runs and trucking, was 1,126,000 bbl compared with 1,193,501 bbl in 1970, a decrease of 67,501 bbl.
