Yuasa Battery Company has been developing a sodium-sulfur battery for electric energy storage. The development was commissioned by the New Energy Development Organization, as a part of the so-called ''Moonlight Project'' administered by the Ministry of International Trade and Industry. The 150 Ah cell has been developed so far. A 1.5 KW Battery is composed of 10 units connected in series, and each unit consisted of six 150 Ah cells connected in parallel. This battery was subjected to constant power, discharge at 1.46 KW and charge at 1.70 KW. On the test, an average discharge current density of 63 mA/cm/sup 2/, an average discharge voltage of 18.2 V and an energy efficiency (DC-DC) of approx. 85% have been obtained. The 1.5 KW battery is now under cycle life test by means of charge/discharge at constant current and constant power, showing a favorable progress in the test.
