As a novel alternative to shop- or field-proving large-volume gas meters, sonic-nozzle proving enables the operator to use varying pressure settings and a greater flow capacity than previous methods while retaining the bell-prover system's high degree of accuracy. When these capabilities are combined with modern microprocessing techniques, the typical proving problems - pulsating pressures, changing temperature readings, and human errors - lose their detrimental effect on the meter-accuracy proof curves. Because of these advantages, SoCal developed and assembled two sonic-nozzle systems and began proving all sizes of turbine, rotary, and large-positive-displacement meters. If the performance of these systems is any indication, sonic-nozzle proving will soon become universally accepted as a gas-industry standard.
