Status of surface mining in India

Journal Article · · World Coal; (United States)
OSTI ID:5955832

With the increase in demand for coal, and the need to mine deeper underground involving higher costs, surface mining has assumed greater significance. Now, surface mining is being carried out on a very large scale in all the major coalfields in India. The overburden to coal ratio is about two cubic meters per ton of coal in the case of open cast mines using trucks and shovels, and about five cubic meters per ton of coal in mines where draglines are being used. Larger ratios are being planned in the new mines now being developed. Programs are also outlined for extending some of the existing mines by working them with a greater overburden ratio. The mining equipments used in these mines are described; some of this equipment is now manufactured in India. (LTN)
