Coal liquefaction short residence time process research, 79-1. First quarterly report, October 1--December 31, 1978

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:5955434
The bench scale coal liquefaction reactor is being modified to increase the accuracy of data required for kinetic studies, and to also extend the region of operation of the reactor. Preliminary concepts have been identified for residence time measurements and further studies are underway to evaluate performance under reaction conditions. Current concepts include: solid phase residence time--magnetic tracer particles or manganese oxide with neutron activation; and liquid phase residence time--reflectance IR or high speed sampling with an organic tracer, radioactive tracer. Limited viscosity and surface tension measurements have been performed in an effort to predict the reactor flow regime.
