Duplicity among stars with strong chromospheric Ca II emission lines - a statistical survey
Journal Article
·
· Astrophys. J.; (United States)
Observations of 38 mainly main-sequence stars with anomalously strong Ca II emission, obtained using coude spectrographs on the 2.1-m and 1-m telescopes at KPNO and the 0.6-m telescope at Lick Observatory, are reported. The data are presented in tables and analyzed; four stars are found to be close-binary candidates. It is concluded that almost all binaries with periods and stellar structures within specified ranges exhibit magnetically induced chromospheric activity, but that other (unknown) mechanisms can produce such activity in single stars as well. 14 references.
