Chemical engineering approach to the cracking and gasification processes of residual oils

Two important and not yet clarified problems in the cracking and the gasification of residual oil in the fluidized bed reactor were treated in this paper. To realize a sufficiently good fluidization condition with relatively low gas velocity in bed, an improved fluidizing method was proposed; and its application results were reported. Attrition rates of the particles in the various types of the fluidized bed were given. To clarify the coking problems, the reaction rate constants were obtained with variously pretreated samples, and related with their chemical structural factors. To overcome the coking problem, a fluidized bed quencher was also discussed. These results would be interesting not only for the gasification and cracking of residual oil, but also for the gasification of coal and tar sands and for the combustion of coal in fluidized bed to some extent. 11 figures, 2 tables.
