Influence of isotopic substitution on metal--insulator transitions in vanadium oxides

A band theory of the metal--insulator phase transition is used to explain qualitatively the isotopic effect observed recently in VO/sub 2/, V/sub 3/O/sub 5/, and V/sub 2/O/sub 3/. The results suggest that there should be no isotopic shift of the Neel temperature and that a new phase (paramagnetic insulator) should appear in V/sub 2/O/sub 3/. A shift of the triple point is predicted for the phase diagram of VO/sub 2/ crystals doped with trivalent ions. The results also suggest the possibility of stabilization of metastable phases in pure VO/sub 2/ by isotopic substitution.
