Electron-spin-resonance study of electron-bombarded polymer electrets. I. Radical formation, piezoelectric and pyroelectric effects

Journal Article · · Phys. Rev., B: Condens. Matter; (United States)
This paper reports the first part of a microscopic investigation of the electret effect by electron spin resonance (ESR). Polypropylene films were electron bombarded and their ESR spectra recorded either under vacuum or in the presence of air. It is shown that large amounts of radicals are formed, due to the breaking of bonds. The influence of air on these radicals is studied, and it is demonstrated that the irradiated part of the polymer is highly sensitive to oxidation. The latter process gives rise to polar species, which are shown to be responsible for the piezoelectric and pyroelectric effects of polypropylene which were observed some years ago.
