This bill was introduced into the U.S. House of Representatives on July 20, 1990 to amend the Asbestos School Hazard Abatement Act of 1984. The U.S. EPA has estimated that more than 44,000 school buildings contain friable asbestos, exposing more than 15,000,000 school children and 1,500,000 school employees to unwarranted health hazards. The main purposes of this act are to direct the EPA to maintain a program to assist local schools in complying with the Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act and to provide scientific, technical, and financial assistance to state and local agencies in abating asbestos health hazards. In addition no employee of a local educational agency who calls attention to potential asbestos hazards in schools shall suffer any disciplinary action.
