A vanadium catalyst composition is described, comprising: (i) the reaction product of a vanadium trihalide wherein the halogen is chlorine, bromine, or iodine, or mixtures thereof, and an electron donor, which is a liquid organic Lewis base in which the vanadium trihalide is soluble; (ii) a modifier, BX/sub 3/ or a compound having the formula AIR/sub (3-a)/X/sub a/ wherein each R is an alkyl radical having 1 to 14 carbon atoms and is alike or different; X is chlorine, bromine, or iodine, or mixtures thereof; and a is 0, 1, or 2; (iii) a silica support into which components (i) and (ii) are impregnated; (iv) a salt admixed with the silica support, the cation of the salt being selected from Groups I and II of the Periodic Chart of the Atoms and the anion of the salt being a carbonate or a sulfate; (v) a halocarbon promoter; and (vi) a hydrocarbyl aluminum cocatalyst.
