A solution-adaptive differencing scheme is presented for equidistributing a measure of the solution error in flow and heat transfer problems. The first step in the algorithm is to compute an error estimate based on a preliminary first-order upwind solution [phi][sub 0]. Grid points with error estimates higher than a prespecified value are flagged. In each flagged region, a third-order-accurate solution is obtained with boundary conditions based on [phi][sub 0]. A multigrid-type calculation is then performed, to the desired level of accuracy, between the outer grid and the flagged inner regions. Results with the adaptive differencing algorithm indicate that significant improvements are obtained.
