Shows how the Socialist government of Mitterrand continues to make France's nuclear program the most aggressive in Western Europe. Factors causing Mitterrand to abandon the antinuclear movement included the traditional French desire for energy independence and the mobilization of the CGT union against a nuclear freeze. Concludes that after the fast-breeder reactor at Creys-Malville is completed, the nation will face the choice of building more such reactors, which could take France the final step into the plutonium age.
