Fusion procedure for the trace metal analysis of coal by atomic adsorption

A method for analyzing coal directly after fusion with lithium tetraborate and subsequent solubilization in 5% HCl is described. Seven major and minor elements (Al, Ca, Fe, K, Mg, Na, Si) and nine trace elements (Cd, Cr, Co, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb, V, Zn) are determined in the fusion solution by atomic absorption spectroscopy. The method shows good accuracy and reproducibility. Comparison of the method with X-ray fluorescence analysis has been made on several coal samples.
