Strengthened protective structure

Patent ·
OSTI ID:5951287
A method is described for protecting an offshore structure in a body of water from the forces of ice moving in the body of water, comprising the steps of: forming a soil berm at a location which is laterally offset from the offshore structure, the soil berm substantially surrounding the offshore structure and having a size and shape adapted to block the passage of the ice; strengthening the soil berm in place by mixing cement with at least a portion of the soil therein, so that the berm withstands the impact of the ice; and filling the space between the soil berm and the offshore structure with deformable unstrengthened soil fill, so as to substantially prevent the transmission of the forces of the impact of the ice from the berm to the offshore structure.
