Phosphate catalysts are employed in industry for the deydrogenation of n-butenes and isoamylenes. This work was carried out for the purpose of precisely determining the phase composition and the roles of the individual components of such phosphate catalysts on the basis of direct measurements. It was shown that nickel-chromium-calcium phosphate catalysts contain not only whitlockite, i.e, calcium phosphate, whose crystal lattice is stabilized by chromium ions, but also nickel pyrophosphate. During the preparation of these catalysts, nickel pyrophosphate becomes supported on the whitlockite.
