Black color in partially stabilized zirconia

Journal Article · · J. Am. Ceram. Soc.; (United States)

The exsolution of iron (ppm) from the bulk of yttria-partially-stabilized zirconia (Y-PSZ) polycrystals caused by a change in oxidation of Fe was found to be responsible for the darkening of the PSZ material. The movement of Fe/sup 2+/ under reducing conditions to the grain boundary has been detected using electron spin resonance techniques.
