The first commercially operated fluidized bed boiler for use in a district heating system was installed at Wilkes-Barre, PA, early in 1984. Although fluidized bed combustion has been in use in chemical and other industries since the 1940's, and tested for use in district heating this is the first commercial application. The boiler burns a mixture of anthracite coal and culm, a by-product of coal mining operations. A fluidized bed not only allows for the use of a lower grade fuel, such as culm, which reduces costs, but also reduces capital costs in the plant since scrubbers are not needed for pollution control.
