High-spin states with the (p,. pi. ) reaction

Conference · · AIP Conf. Proc.; (United States)

Data from systematic studies of the A(p,..pi../sup -/)A+1 reaction leading to discrete and continuous nuclear final states have revealed both expected and unexpected signatures of the dominance of a two nucleon mechanism (TNM: NN ..-->.. NN..pi.. inside the nucleus) in near-threshold pion production. A distinctive manifestation of this dominance is the systematic and selective excitation by TNM (p,..pi../sup -/) of high-spin 2p-1h states on target nuclei throughout the periodic table, representing a universal and fundamental response of the nucleus to this high momentum transfer probe. Questions as to whether TNM is also dominant in A(p,..pi../sup +/)A+1, what are the corresponding implications for high-spin excitations, and to what extent is the overall observed (p,..pi../sup +/) behavior related to what is known about fundamental NN ..-->.. NN..pi../sup +/ processes are addressed through investigation of the /sup 13/C(p,..pi../sup +- /) reactions populating the mirror nuclei /sup 14/C and /sup 14/O. In the course of these studies, comparative (p,..pi../sup +/) vs. (p,..pi../sup -/) data were used to suggest a J/sup ..pi../ = 5/sup -/ assignment for a previously unobserved state near E/sub X/ = 15 MeV in the (p,..pi../sup +/) spectra. Also of interest is a strong and sharp (p,..pi../sup +/) transition at relatively high excitation (E/sub X/ approx. = 23.2 MeV) in /sup 14/C. While we find most observed features in the (p,..pi../sup +- /) spectra are consistent with TNM expectations, one possible explanation for the latter state's unique behavior involves the anomalous enhancement of normally weak free NN ..-->.. NN..pi.. isospin channels when immersed in the nuclear medium.
