Solvent flood promises 95% oil recovery
In spite of the high contrary odds, it appears that Imperial Oil Ltd. has found a fortunate combination of conditions in one of its fields that will permit an almost unbelievable high recovery. Imperial expects to profitably produce up to 95% of the oil in place from its Golden Spike South D-3A Pool, located near Edmonton, Alta. Imperial's Golden Spike miscible flood and oil cycling project injects a solvent bank at the gas-oil contact to form a blanket between gas and oil zones. LPG is stripped from rich gas zones; excess crude and dry gas are reinjected into the reservoir. The Golden Spike miscible flood involves 7 producing wells, 3 solvent injection wells, 2 crude and gas injection wells, and 1 dry gas injection well. It should be noted that the methods incorporated in this most impressive project are not applicable to all producing reservoirs.
