Title: What Project Rulison can mean to US domestic energy supply

Journal Article · · World Oil; (United States)

Cleaned out and recompleted after mechanical difficulties were encountered, the Project Rulison reentry well in NW. Colorado's Mesaverde reservoir is undergoing further flow-rate testing. This test was jointly sponsored by Austral Oil Co., Inc., the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission, and U.S. Department of Interior. The project is the first step toward a commercial nuclear venture. The main thing that Austral Oil Co. has learned from Project Rulison is that nuclear stimulation procedure for gas sands is technically and economically feasible. If nuclear stimulation will make large supplies of natural gas available, nuclear stimulation will be of great benefit to the public, as well as to the gas and oil industry. In tight oil and gas reservoirs, the shattering of large quantities of rock which will cause oil or gas to become available in economical quantities, certainly offers an application that should be explored. Nuclear energy has many potential applications in development of mineral resources as well as in industrial waste management or disposal, water conservation, and excavation.
