The objective of the present work is to apply the discrete exchange factor (DEF) method to a gray rectangular enclosure containing an absorbing-emitting and isotropically scattering medium. The results of this method are compared to those of the zonal (Larsen and Howell, 1985) and discrete-ordinate (Fiveland, 1984) methods and exact solutions (Shah, 1979; Crosbie Schrenker, 1984). The accuracy of the method is demonstrated for different gas and surface conditions and the effect of the number of nodes on the computational time is also examined.
