The oxidation of azide by peroxymonosulfate has been studied in acid, neutral, and basic solutions, and the oxidation of Cr(NH/sub 3/)/sub 5/N/sub 3//sup 2 +/ by peroxymonosulfate has been studied in acid. The reaction with azide obeys the rate law k/sub 1/(N/sub 3//sup -/)(HSO/sub 5//sup -/) in acid and neutral solution and the rate law k/sub 2/(N/sub 3//sup -/)(SO/sub 5//sup 2 -/) in base. The reaction with Cr(NH/sub 3/)/sub 5/N/sub 3//sup 2 +/ obeys the rate law k/sub 3/(Cr(NH/sub 3/)/sub 5/N/sub 3//sup 2 +/)(HSO/sub 5//sup -/). At 25/sup 0/C, k/sub 1/ = 0.66 L/(mol s), k/sub 2/ = 0.0076 L/(mol s), and k/sub 3/ = 0.013 L/(mol s). Oxygen-18 tracer experiments show that the reactions proceed by transfer of a terminal peroxide oxygen of the peroxymonosulfate to the reductant. 4 tables.
