Smart thermostats have become energy managers able to combine comfort, convenience, and energy savings. With a programmable setback function, a thermostat acts as a timer to adjust temperature levels. Most thermostats have two setback patterns, one for weekdays, another for weekends. A rule of thumb for calculating savings is that for every degree or setback over an eight-hour period will save 1% of the annual heating. The reverse is true for air conditioning bills. Smart thermostats, which allow fine tuning, can realize even greater savings.
